  1. Why LEGO?

    Someone's going to ask eventually, so I'll get ahead of it.
    If you've looked at anything I've put out — the blog headers, the socials, the odd bit of branding — you've noticed the Lego. It's not a design gimmick. It goes back a long way.
    Picture a living room in the 1980s. Wood panelling, the whole house hazy with cigarette smoke, a TV going somewhere. I've dumped an entire bin of bricks onto the floor, and I'm building a spaceship. Star Trek was probably in the back of my head, but honestly I just liked spaceships. What I remember most is trying to build a triangle out of square blocks, and I wouldn't let it go.

    My grandmother was in the kitchen. My mom was downstairs. My parents were in the house. They just weren't in the room, if that makes sense.
    I was asking myself why I even wanted to write about this, and honestly, I'm not sure. It's not that I'm hoping people will understand, or feel some kind of empathy for me — it really isn't a bigger story than that. I used to think the eighties were harder than today. Now I'm not so sure that's true. But hard or not, it shaped us — the good, bad, and ugly parts. I didn't have a lot of "friends" back then, not the way the movies show it, but kinda... I do recall the neighbourhood gang of friends and me out on our bikes till dark with no adult keeping track of us. Nothing close to what kids have today. But is that better? Or just different?
    I don't think I wanted to raise my own kids that way. But then you reflect on how much your past shapes who you become. We hope to give our kids better than what we had — but is "better" the same as "better off"? I'm sure everyone who grew up in the eighties has their own version of that question.
    Lego was there. That's the whole reason. I've gone looking for a deeper explanation, and there isn't one. It was just the thing I did for hours — figuring things out on my own, with people around but never really in the room with me.
    Fast forward about thirty-five years or more.
    My first company was at its peak and quietly coming apart underneath me. My marriage had just found its feet again after a separation that wasn't pretty. I sat in a chair across from someone whose job was to ask difficult questions, and she asked me about my fondest memories.
    I said building Lego.
    She said, So go buy some Lego.
    I told her it was too expensive. Then I went out and bought some expensive Lego anyway, took it home, and started building.

    I'm not going to pretend that fixed anything. It didn't. It did give me a great collection that I built on with my girls. But there's something about sitting down with a pile of parts and a problem that has an actual solution — where the pieces either fit or they don't, and no amount of stress makes a brick the wrong shape. You put your head down, and an hour later there's a thing in front of you that wasn't there before.
    That's most of what I do for a living, when I think about it. Someone hands me a pile of parts that were never meant to go together and asks for a spaceship. Half the job is knowing which pieces you actually have.
    So that's why Lego shows up everywhere in my work. A kid on the floor trying to make triangle-shaped spaceships out of square blocks, and a grown man who eventually figured out he never stopped.

  2. Here's a sentence that should make any IT person put down their coffee: the emergency patch has its own emergency patch.
    That's where PaperCut landed this week. PaperCut NG and MF — print management software that runs in thousands of offices — had a zero-day under active exploitation. They released an emergency patch. Then researchers found new ways to exploit the same flaws, and a second emergency patch had to go out almost immediately after. BleepingComputer confirmed active exploitation across both cycles, and Huntress flagged at least two verified compromises in the MSP community before the dust settled.
    If you run PaperCut in your environment and you haven't patched to Release 2, you are currently exposed. That's not a maybe.
    But the bigger issue isn't the patch — it's the cycle.
    What happened with PaperCut this week isn't actually rare. It's a pattern. A critical vulnerability gets disclosed. A patch goes out fast—because speed feels like safety. Then the researchers who found the original flaw, or other teams who started digging, find adjacent attack paths the first patch didn't close. And now you're in round two of an emergency, except this time the bad actors already know where to look.
    This matters for small businesses in Manitoba for a specific reason: most of you don't have a dedicated security team checking vendor bulletins on a Tuesday afternoon. You have whoever manages your IT — maybe that's an in-house person, maybe that's me — and that person has about twelve other things happening. Patch fatigue is real. "We just patched that" is a sentence that can get a network compromised.
    The Huntress thread on Reddit's r/msp had MSPs describing active exploitation happening before some clients even finished deploying the first patch. That's not a comfortable timeline.
    What actually happens when print management software gets hit
    Print servers aren't glamorous. They sit in the corner of the server room or in a VM, and nobody thinks about them until the Xerox stops working. But PaperCut runs with elevated privileges on most deployments — it has to, to manage print queues and user authentication across the network. That means a successful exploit doesn't just get you print logs. It can be a pivot point into the broader network.
    ShinyHunters pulled 86 GB out of Manchester Airports Group this week. McKesson disclosed a breach the same week involving third-party application access. These aren't all print server stories — but they're all the same story: attackers are patient, they know which software sits with high privileges and low attention, and they wait for the window.
    PaperCut just opened a window. Twice.
    Here's what you actually do this week
    If you're a small-business owner and you have a print management tool on your network — PaperCut or otherwise — here's your short list:
    Ask your IT person which version you're running. Not which version you updated to last month. Which version is running right now, confirmed.
    Make sure they know about Release 2, not just the first patch. The first patch was not sufficient. PaperCut's own advisory makes this clear.
    If you don't have an IT person actively watching vendor advisories, that's a gap worth talking about. Not a sales pitch — just a reality. These advisories move fast, and they're written in a language most business owners don't have time to parse.
    Check your exposure. Is your PaperCut instance internet-facing? Does it need to be? Most print management software does not need to be reachable from outside your network, and if it is, that's worth closing regardless of patch status.
    The patch is necessary. The patch alone is not enough. The question underneath all of this is whether anyone in your corner of the building is watching when these things happen — not after the fact, but in the window that matters.

  3. A new piece of malware showed up this week, and its delivery method is what should give you pause. BleepingComputer reported on something called SynkLoader — a previously unknown malware family that's being pushed through Microsoft Teams. Not email. Not a sketchy website. Teams. The tool that, at this point, half of small businesses in Canada use to run their day. The attack works like this: someone sends you a message through Teams, you interact with it, and eventually you see what looks like a Windows lock screen asking you to sign back in. Except it's fake. You type your password, and it's gone. That's it. That's the whole trick. And it works because we've been trained to trust the lock screen.
    Why Teams is a problem nobody's talking about: Email phishing has been a known threat for so long that most people have at least some instinct around it. You've heard "don't click suspicious links." You may have even had a training session about it. But Teams? Nobody's running awareness campaigns about Teams phishing. It still feels like the safe internal tool, the thing your team uses to send memes and share files. Attackers know that. What makes SynkLoader specifically ugly is that it's new. Security tools that rely on known signatures — matching malware against a library of previously identified threats — won't catch something that's never been seen before. It takes a few cycles for the threat intelligence to catch up. In the meantime, the malware is running in the wild against real people, at real businesses, collecting real credentials. And the credential theft is the point. Once an attacker has a valid username and password for your Microsoft 365 account, they don't need to do anything dramatic. They can log in quietly, read your email, access your SharePoint, poke around in whatever's connected to that account. If you're not using multi-factor authentication, the game is basically over before you know it started.
    This week's ticket activity reminded me that I had a busy week on the monitoring side — RAM alerts, CPU spikes, disk queue warnings across three different clients. Most of it was hardware headroom stuff, machines that are getting long in the tooth and starting to show it. But the throughline is the same thing this Teams story is really about: these problems exist quietly in the background, flagging themselves, until something tips over. SynkLoader doesn't announce itself. Neither does a machine running at 92% RAM for two weeks straight. The difference is that my monitoring caught the hardware stuff. The Teams phishing attempt? That only gets caught if someone knows what to look for, pauses before they type, and understands that even familiar tools can be weaponized.
    What you can actually do right now: A few things that matter here, none of them complicated: Turn on MFA. If an attacker steals a credential and MFA is on, they still can't get in without your phone. This one step blunts the entire SynkLoader attack chain. If you're on Microsoft 365 and MFA isn't enabled, that's the conversation we should be having this week.
    Slow down on unexpected prompts. If Teams — or anything else — suddenly asks you to sign in and you weren't expecting it, stop. Close the window. Open a fresh browser tab, go directly to microsoft.com, and sign in from there. If it was legitimate, you'll be fine. If it wasn't, you just saved yourself.
    New tools aren't automatically safe. Teams, Slack, WhatsApp for Business — attackers go where people pay attention. Right now, people pay a lot of attention to Teams. That makes it a target. I'll be honest: there's no single tool that blocks everything, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What actually works is layers — MFA, monitoring, good habits, and someone who's paying attention to what's new in the threat landscape so you don't have to. SynkLoader is brand new. It's already in the wild. And it's going after something every one of my clients uses every day.   4. If you've looked at my site for more than thirty seconds, you've probably seen three letters show up over and over: MSP. It stands for managed service provider. And I get it — that's a mouthful of jargon for something that's actually pretty simple.
    So let me explain it the way I'd explain it at your kitchen table or across your front desk. No buzzwords. Just what it means and why it matters to you — whether "you" is a family in River Heights or a six-person office in the Exchange District.
    Where the term even came from
    Back in the day, if your computer broke, you called "the computer guy." He showed up, fixed the thing, handed you a bill, and left. That's called break/fix — something breaks, someone fixes it. Simple, but reactive. You only got help after you were already stuck.
    The term "managed services" grew out of the late 1990s, when companies started delivering and managing software and IT for their clients remotely instead of just showing up when the pipes burst. Then in the early 2000s, tools called remote monitoring and management (RMM) arrived that let one person keep an eye on a lot of computers from one screen — quietly, in the background, all the time. That was the birth of proactive IT management, and it moved the whole industry away from hourly billing toward a steady monthly service. Instead of waiting for the phone to ring, the IT person could catch problems before they became disasters.
    That's the whole idea behind an MSP. We manage your technology on purpose, ahead of time — not just when it's already on fire.
    Break/fix vs. managed: the Lego version
    Here's how I think about it.
    Break/fix is a bucket of loose Lego bricks. When something falls apart, you dig through the pile and glue a piece back on. It works, kind of, until the next piece pops off.
    Managed service is building from the instructions, with a plan. Every brick has a place. And someone's checking the build regularly to make sure nothing's coming loose. When you build with a system, the whole thing is stronger — and you're not constantly scrambling to fix the same corner over and over.
    That's the shift the whole IT industry made. Break/fix is the old way. Managed is the standard now, and it's why "MSP" is the term you'll hear everywhere instead of "IT guy" or "computer repair shop."
    What an MSP actually does
    For a flat, predictable fee, a managed service provider handles the boring-but-critical stuff so you don't have to think about it:
    Monitoring — watching your devices and network so problems get spotted early, often before you even notice
    Patching — keeping Windows, your apps, and your equipment updated (most security messes start with something that didn't get updated)
    Backups — making copies of your important files, and actually checking that they work
    Security — protecting against the scams, ransomware, and junk that show up in inboxes every day

    According to Parks Associates, the average internet-connected household now runs around 17 connected devices — and other 2026 counts put it as high as 21. Phones, laptops, tablets, a smart TV, a doorbell camera, maybe a thermostat and a couple of speakers. That's genuinely more complicated than a small office was fifteen years ago. And all of it holds your photos, your banking, your kids' school stuff.
    You don't need an enterprise IT department. But having someone keep your backups running, your devices patched, and your network locked down? That's peace of mind. It means your family vacation photos aren't a single hard-drive failure away from being gone forever.
    Why it matters for a Winnipeg small business
    If you run a shop, a clinic, or an office here in town, your tech isn't a hobby — it's how you get paid. When the system's down, nobody's working, but everybody's still on the clock. That adds up fast.
    There's a real risk side too.   8. Microsoft has a busy retirement schedule this year and some of it will affect small businesses directly. Here's what's actually worth paying attention to.
    The one from this week
    Microsoft is retiring the standalone Access Database Compare utility (DATABASECOMPARE.EXE) in June 2026. Customers have until June 20th to use it before it's removed entirely. Honestly, most small businesses won't notice this one — but if you use Microsoft Access as a database tool, now's a good time to review what you actually depend on.
    The bigger ones coming later this year
    Microsoft Publisher is being retired in October 2026 — it will no longer be part of Microsoft 365, and users won't be able to open or edit Publisher files after that. If anyone on your team still uses Publisher for newsletters, flyers, or business cards, start moving those files to Word or Canva now — not in September when you're scrambling.
    Also worth knowing: Office 2021 is being discontinued on October 13th, 2026. If you bought a one-time Office license rather than a Microsoft 365 subscription, your software won't get security updates after that date. It'll still work, but it becomes a risk.
    And prices are going up
    Microsoft 365 plans are seeing price increases effective July 1, 2026 — ranging from approximately 5% to 33% depending on the plan. If you're on a Microsoft 365 subscription, expect your renewal to cost more in the second half of this year.

    Nothing urgent for most of you right now — but if you're still on Office 2021 perpetual licenses or using Publisher regularly, let's talk before the fall crunch hits. A 30-minute conversation now is easier than an emergency migration in October.
